Biography:
Born in France, Gaston Lachaise moved to the United States in 1906 and later became one of the country’s leading modern sculptors. He moved from Boston to New York in 1912, where he became the assistant to Paul Manship. He married his inspiration, American Isabel Dutaud Nagle in 1917. Lachaise was proficient in stone, metal and wood but his most famous works were in bronze. His portrait busts are noted for their psychological character and he also created small decorative animal sculptures. However, he is most famous for his female nudes, which have been compared to those of Renoir.
